Chi Chi Chi Chia...

So... you know they're edible, right?
No no ... not the actual Chia pet, but the Chia seed.  My dietician suggested them to me after she saw that I was deficient by way of Omega-3 intake.

Salvia hispanica kicks some major butt, and (I think) has a very interesting texture when it is introduced to moisture (like in yogurt).  They are one of those ancient foods that went out of style for a few hundred years except among some cultures.  They're gaining back some steam thanks to new studies that show just how healthy they are for you and your diet:

- chia has the highest known percentage of alpha-linolenic acid, and the highest combined alpha-linolenic and linoleic fatty acid percentage of all crops
- chia has more protein, lipids, energy, and fiber but fewer carbs than rice, barley, oats, wheat, or corn and its protein is gluten-free
- chia is an excellent source of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, and copper
- chia is low in sodium: salmon has 78 times as much, tuna 237 times as much
- chia exhibits no evidence of allergic response, even in individuals with peanut and tree-nut allergies
- chia does not give off a a fishy flavor, a unlike some other sources of omega-3 fatty acid

Chia seed also makes flax seed hide in a corner because of its nutritional profile as well as its taste (okay, except for a few nutrients like Potassium, but you can eat a banana covered in chia and it's nommy!).

You should be able to get chia at a health food store.  If not, you can find it on the internet at places like Amazon (3lbs will last you a while as the seeds themselves are pretty light).

My Cruel Mistress

I know she's female b/c even when she's wrong, she's right
8.25 km on the Interval Training (warmup of 20 x-ramp; 1 resistance then into 4 x-ramp; 1 resistance --> 10 x-ramp; 8 resistance) (1 hour even, 740 calories burned, over 10k steps)

Prior to running I did some upper body weights (gotta have nice arms for the bridesmaid dress) as well as some piriformis stretching prior to running.

I challenge you to do the same.  The piriformis is an under-stretched, under-utilized muscle.  I bet you hadn't even heard of it before I mentioned it (unless you've studied physiology).  It's the muscle that connects your upper body (your sacrum) to your lower body (head of the femur).  There are a few ways to stretch the piriformis -- sitting, standing, or on the floor (on your back or using it as leverage), but I highly suggest you become familiar with this muscle.  It'll help your hips stay loose when you run.  ((And don't forget to rock some warrior poses to work the other hip flexor muscles!  ((Warrior I, Warrior II especially))

What's in your wallet gym bag?

I have 2 gym bags -- one for the gym and one for softball (uniform & cleats).

In my gym bag I have the following:

You love me, You really love me!

So not only are you helping me reach my goal of 100 followers, you are gracing me with awards (and such humbling compliments)!  The lovely Ms. Ali has give me the Sugar Doll award.

The rules are as follows:
1. Thank the recipient: Ali, thank you so much -- especially for what you said about me (that my posts are "brilliant and so honest"  *blushes*)
2. Link back to the giver:  http://thescalessaywhat.blogspot.com/
3. Reveal 10 things about me.
4. Pass along to 3 other bloggers.

I'm going to start with #4.  I'm going to post some blogs outside the normal blog hop of dieters that I think are fantastic.  I don't think they follow my blog, but well... they should (hahaha):
Always Order Dessert -- Alejandra posts some beautiful recipies, and some are very health-forward. Some not so much.  But i love the way she plays with ingredients.
Closet Cooking -- Kevin from canada also has some great recipies.  Think about how you can make healthier modifications to what he makes.
Pinch My Salt -- More beautiful recipies and photos from Nicole's blog.
10 things about me:

1. I have a degree in English with minors and creative writing and biological anthropology.  If I had taken a few classes in music theory, I could have gone for a vocal performance minor as well.

While I was at GW, I was very lucky to take a writing class (among many others) with New Yorker essayist, Suzannah Lessard.  I've always known I was a writer, and that I had something to say, but I was never good with fiction, and my poetry was dismal at best.  When I started to write for Suzannah, she pulled me aside one day and said "If you didn't know before, I wanted to tell you now in an unequivocal manner:  you are an essayist."  I took her word for it and never looked back.

GW's grades topped out at As, but she frequently put A+ at the top of my pages, because I was so willing to put my heart and opinion on the page.

2.  I love to volunteer at my local animal shelter (and will hopefully have more time to do it in the near future).

Because of the shelter's reputation as one of the best shelters on the East coast (and perhaps even the country) and its affiliation with the Humane Society, we often get some of the worst case animals -- from puppy mills, from hoarding situations, from abuse situations, and from dog-fighting cases (we had 11 of Michael Vick's dogs).

So not only do I get to play with dogs and cats, I get to make a real difference in their lives.  What they don't get is that they're making a real difference in mine.  It is one of the most humbling situations when an animal that has been mistreated and cast aside chooses me to lay their had on, or to trust me to brush out their matted hair.  Their ability to forgive is something that I find lacking from humanity sometimes.

3. I just signed up for Twitter (something I said I'd never do) with encouragement from my neighbor Betsy. You can follow me @FatGirlvsWorld.  But don't worry -- the majority of my content will be here.

4.  I love my job. I know it's weird to include that, but I know so many people that hate their job. I'm a legal secretary.  I work for 2 partners and 1 associate in a large international firm.  In regards to weight loss, they are ALL awesome.  They didn't complain too much when I stopped putting out a candy dish.  They let me take my hour (+10 minutes) so I can get a good run in during lunch.  They are all just faboo.  I love the work too.  I used to be a bartender/waitress.  Standing on my feet for 12 hour shifts SUCKED (but was good for cardio burn and going up stairs/butt toning).  I get to sit down and use my brain in this job.

5. I have two cats that are the loves of my life.  (I know, I'm cat lady...)
On the left is Spiked Punch (Spike).  He's 8 and a sexy mansycat.  He is a regular Catsanova.  He can read my moods and is a fantastic predictor of my health.  He loves the smell of stinky shoes.

On the right is Jack Daniels (Jack, or Woozle).  He's a cuddlebug.  He goes nuts for the Furminator to the point he has to be rationed a certain amount of time with it or he'd go bald.  He likes to take self-portraits of himself using my webcam.

6.  I am an autobiophotoblographer.  I like to take pictures of my life to post on my blog to document what I've been up to.  Autobiophotoblographer is just an easier way to say it.  I always have my camera on me.  I like taking pictures of places I've been, partners in crime, interesting sights, animals, food that I've eaten, concerts, etc..  You name it, I've photographed it.  Thank goodness for digital photography or I'd be quite poor.  My mom was an amateur photographer as well.

7.  I'm not afraid of heights, but I'm afraid of falling.  I hate it when people try to lift me.  I don't like going on hikes that have me shimmying across tiny rock ledges.  I don't like wire bridges.  But give me enough time to calm down and I can do it.  Needles, on the other hand, are insurmountable thus far (though I didn't faint/cry/ or vomit for either of the 2 epidurals I had).

8.  Speaking of epidurals... I don't know whether I want to have kids or not.  Growing up I thought I did, but more recently I just don't feel the biological imperative to do so.  But then again, when I was 8, I thought I'd be 28 and married already.   Btw, 8 is my lucky number.

9.  While I have a TV, I don't plug it in -- no cable, no satellite tv.  I used to get home from work around 6:30, and the Simpsons would be on.  Then Jeopardy. Then another Simpsons. And then it'd be 8pm programming.  In other words, I'd come home from work (where I sit all day) and I'd sit down for a few more hours.  The sedentary lifestyle was killing me.  So I made the deicision to not watch TV.  I miss jeopardy... but thus far in the 4 years without tv, it hasn't killed me.  I only use it for my Wii (I love my wii fit) and for dvds (a finite period of time every now and then...and i'm usually watching it from my balance ball).

10.  Another life-changing moment was when I started reading about Buddhism and more importantly Thich Nhat Hanh.  I can't even begin to describe to you the change of (1) forgiving myself and (2) not being angry has made.  Even with the whole weight loss thing, I find that because of those two things, I tend to let the bad days go and not feel too much guilt about them.  They happened. But what am I doing this moment?  What am I capable of doing this moment? It keeps me looking forward instead of looking behind.  When something comes up emotionally, I turn towards it instead of casting it aside.

Unrelated thoughts...

1. Hello to all my new followers and everyone that has spread the word about my blog.  I'm forever in your debt! It really warms my little megalomaniac heart of mine.

2. I really hate doing laundry...but as I'm going to the gym more often, and it's summer, I'm doing more and more of it.  Part of me wonders if I was never good at going to the gym because I hate all the laundry it entails.  And well, there are some things that even odor absorbers can't do.

3. I mean, I don't really know how I feel about moisture-wicking underwear.  I wear cotton underwear when I exercise.  The upside of this is that I'm putting more of my fancy underwear into normal rotation.  It makes me feel... well.... fancy.  I guess I could use the whole laundry issue as an excuse, but if that were the case, I'd just buy more plain underwear.  The truth of the matter is that I'm really starting to like my body a bit more.   The gift wrap is more than just the first layer.

π.  I love getting Chinese/Thai takeout.  What I've been doing for a while is getting the sauce on the side and getting the entree steamed.  I use the leftover sauces to create new dishes. I think it's hard for just about any of us to say we'd go sauceless, but this is a good way to extend the life of that one meal.

4. I love Jack Sh*t, Getting Fit's post -- 5-Word Fitness.  What diet/health/nutrition advice would you give if you only had 5 words?

5. I have a few challenges for you all.  Choose one, choose them all. My wonderfully talented neighbor and I were chatting and it inspired me to do this:
A.  If you are addicted to soda (regular OR diet) -- give it up for a week and drink seltzer instead.  Really try and figure out why you feel you need to drink it.  Is it sugar? Is it the caffeine?  OR (as my theory goes) is it the 'texture' of carbonation on your tongue? Then lemme know how that goes!! At the very least you've proven that (1) you won't die (2) you're in charge and (3) those extra calories aren't worth it...
B.  NAKED TIME!!  -- if you already have some naked time (non-sexual, but just you being with you), write about it!  How do you feel about your body?  Is it a positive experience or are you picking out flaws?  If you don't have naked time in your life -- like walking around in your room/home naked like a jaybird while you do chores, or even blog -- work your way up to 10 minutes of naked time.  Write about it when you're ready.
C.   Tell me how you're incorporating the "New Rules" into your life.  Have any new rules to add to the bunch?
D.  For those of you who have pedometers, garmins, or another way to track their steps... I am hoping you're getting the minimum of 10k steps/day.  I want you to pick a day and then break down those steps down into increments of 1,000 or 2,000.  For each increment you do, dedicate it to someone who has helped you or even hindered on your journey.  Anything over 10,000, dedicate it to yourself or someone you hope to inspire.  Post your list and your reasons why you chose those people.
Okay, have at it, my dear friends.  I can't wait to hear from you!

Non-health or exercise related goal....

I really want to get to 100 followers...

As an incentive, I'll put it to you all this way:  when I reach 100 followers (42 more!), I will post a mini-interview with Registered Dietitian, Rebecca Scritchfield that was done specifically for this blog!  Not only is she my dietitian, but she was also recognized by the American Dietetic Association as 2009's Young Dietitian of the Year.  Pretty cool, right?  She's an amazing resource, a wealth of information (always posting great articles like this one), and one of my biggest supporters (she's been there and done that).

Until I reach 100, you just get the questions (her answers are fantastic, btw)!

Question 1:  Who should see a nutritionist/ can you break down your patients into a few categories?

Question 2:  What insights might a nutritionist have that the average GP/internist might not?

Question 3:  How does your own weight loss struggle inform your practice as a nutritionist?

Question 4:  Do you have a few quick & easy changes people can make to improve their diets?

Question 5:  If someone isn't meeting their caloric targets, what's usually the suspect? How should they meet their target in a healthy way?

Thanks to all who share my blog!  I'm really excited to not only reach one of my goals, but by doing so help you reach your goals!  To all my new followers, welcome to my blog and I can't wait to have some fun!

The mirror has two faces...

So have been writing lots about how photos have restored my sense of self... well that's kind of a half truth.  For every one good picture there are many more that I don't like -- that I feel mortified by.

1 & 2:  Meeting Josh Groban.  I look HUGE here, especially when I turned to give him a kiss on the cheek.  This is in 2001, I believe.  That and why the heck am I wearing that god awful skirt?  I am a monochromatic mess.  I wish I had some gorgeous picture with him where I look svelte and he looks enamored of me.   But well, this is what I got.  Awkward.  Obese.  **sighs**

3.  This is what I look like when I have fallen down drunk.  Moreover, this is me in 2005 in my prom dress that I had custom-made for me.  Yep. Italian Renaissance.  I was effing cool back then.  But this is just a good example about why i don't drink to excess.  It's not pretty.

4.  in 2000?  I look like a sausage.  A very fat sausage.  Wearing striped tights. The odd thing is that i just got rid of that sweater a year and a half ago.  It took that long to realize that it was doing nothing to make me look feminine and pretty.

5.  There was one more photo that I wanted to add to this list -- but i think I probably deleted it.  It was at a club, I'm wearing something too small for me, and my eyes are glazed over from how much I had to drink.  It wasn't pretty at all -- but it's yet another reason why I don't drink to excess anymore.  I start leaving photographic evidence.

Fine Tuning

How many times do I have to say it?  If I want to lose weight, I have to stop drinking.

I at least am avoiding the binge drinking habits that are a staple of summer (thanks to the ridiculous heat that makes me want to live inside of a watermelon) and being more moderate.

I don't want to feel guilty for wanting to have a drink with friends, but it's when I have two and a half glasses of wine at 10pm at a bar while I'm eating my dinner (salad and a side of mac & cheese that i ate 1/3 of because it was so soupy.  Boo hiss.).  And this was after drinking a sugary, unsatisfying strawberry daiquiri at the baseball game.

I wanted the first glass of wine.  The bartender bought me the 2nd glass of wine, and then topped off the half before I could stop him.  I had a plan going in to have one glass, but it went south very fast.  I shouldn't have been eating that late (I was hungry, though) and I shouldn't have gone to a bar.  I broke 2 of my three FCAs (focus correction areas) in one sitting!

I want to stress that I am not an alcoholic.  It is something i'm aware of, as it is on both sides of my family.  What I am is a 28 y/o that enjoys a drink or two in the right context.  BUT i have already said that my priority is losing weight, going to the gym, and becoming healthy.  Drinking is contrary to this.

I'll put away my tiny violin....

So I wrote that post about leading a lonely life... only to go out with my brother and 9 of his friends to the Nationals v. Mets game.  It was hot as hell in the sun, and I wasn't my normal bubbly self because I believe my brain was actually being fried.  But I had a good time, and I realize that sometimes I just need to say I'm in a funk to be able to get out of it (either under my own power or with a little help from my friends).

I also posted the other day about how I went from having a camera be my foe to it being my friend... thought I'd share...
